Renaissance silk orphrey panel on Velvet, probably French.  A vertically oriented hand woven and embroidered Renaissance silk fragment, likely from a chasuble, with a central heraldic crest with an eagle or phoenix on one side and blue and yellow horizontal stripes on the other, set on red velvet, with three urns, each encircled by scrolled foliates and leaves with metallic threads, with a later metallic threaded brocade border and fleur-de-lis corners, applied to a red velvet background with a foliated brocade border.  17th century.

Approximate height 75.5", width 52".

Condition: Visible wear throughout red velvet surround, with some areas appearing scraped, crushed and thread-bare.   Tears around central embroidered section. Scattered light discoloration commensurate with age throughout.  Border with smaller scattered loose threads and losses. Loops at top with some losses. Scattered fraying throughout.
