A highly evocative late Gothic figure of the Mourning Virgin, carved in wood with remnants of early polychromy, circa 1475–1525. Depicted veiled, with hands clasped and her sorrowful gaze directed upward toward the absent figure of Christ, the Virgin would originally have formed part of a larger Crucifixion or Calvary group. The shallow construction and roughly finished reverse indicate that the figure was intended for incorporation into an altarpiece or other architectural setting and viewed principally from the front. The carving belongs to the broad tradition of late Gothic devotional sculpture flourishing in France, the Low Countries and Spain around 1500; without documentary provenance, a more precise regional attribution remains uncertain.
