A charming and unusually early provincial coffret from the Auvergne region of France, dating to the 17th century. The vigorously carved façade is decorated with two large radiating rosettes, one of six lobes and the other of four, enclosed within deeply molded circular borders, with related carving continuing onto the sides. The plain interior contrasts with the richly worked exterior and retains its early hand-forged iron strap hinges and lock fittings. Boxes of this general type belong to the distinctive tradition of Auvergnat and Velay folk carving, in which rosettes and other geometric motifs were particularly favored. Such small coffrets are sometimes identified in France as coffrets de mariage or coffrets de dentellière (lacemaker's boxes), although the precise original purpose of this example cannot be established.
