A French Renaissance carved walnut chest decorated with male and female classical busts in antique costume, flanking a central fleur-de-lis roundel amid scrolling foliate ornament, circa 1550 to 1625.  Throughout France in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, confronting busts of a man and woman commonly symbolized marriage, household unity, founders of a family line, or husband and wife as joint heads of the household.  In many examples, the couple are not literal portraits but idealized representations of the married pair.  Incorporating classical motifs, such as the winged helmet, was very common.
