A small walnut Italian bench (or settee) constructed from antique elements including some original 15th century parts with intarsia work. Original and complete 15th century furniture of this type is rare, and in later centuries, original decorative parts were preserved by incorporating them into reconstructed pieces such as this.
Height 36", width 34", depth 17"
Intarsia is "an elaborate form of marquetry using inlays in wood, especially as practiced in 15th-century Italy." (Oxford Dictionary)
Condition: As viewed from the front, most of the back rest and seat appear to be original 15th century parts, and have an attractive old patina with light worming. The structural parts seen from the upper back and all of the lower back section were taken from a 15th/16th century walnut chest. The other parts are from various periods, some early and some later. There is a hole on the horizontal board behind the seat and two holes in the back lower section. Some minor losses to the inlay. Sturdy and good to use.
