Note on the maker:
Willem Gib, son of Willem Gib senior, is the younger member of an important Rotterdam clockmaking family. He appears to have been born in 1707 and baptized in Rotterdam on 15 May. Sources give him as working approximately 1725–1770. He made longcase clocks (staande klokken), wall clocks, table clocks, and watches. In 1744 he is specifically recorded as a clockmaker working on the Noordblaak in Rotterdam.
A recent academic study of so-called “Dutch forgery” watches discusses watches signed “Gibb, Rotterdam” and identifies Willem Gib/William Gib as father and son working approximately 1710–1780. It notes surviving examples in the British Museum, Clockmakers' Company, Science Museum and Geneva's École d'Horlogerie.
